The dilemma of Polygamy

Polygamy is a controversial issue. Opinions on this issue are sharply divided. Some divines regard polygamy to be holy thing, a religious obligation whereas others deem it inhuman act. Let us analyze these conflicting views. In south Asian countries specially India Pakistan, mostly people condemn polygamy as their culture has developed under powerful impact Hinduism. Western culture also frowns at the concept of polygamy. However, even in these cultures, we find the examples of polygamy and even the kings had to flirt with dogmas in order to marry more than once. The culture of Arabia and Africa has always promoted polygamy. In Igbo society of Africa, it is regarded manly to have so many wives. It is also regarded to be a matter of pride and the individual who has one wife is considered womanly. The close studiers of human nature aver that polygamy is in accordance with human nature Islam allows polygamy. As a result, the divines marry more than once as they believe it to be a holy thing. However, we believe that it is not obligatory to go for polygamy. It is allowed only conditionally and not as a fun. On the other hand, the feminists, westernized n Hindu dominated people seem it inhuman to go for polygamy. If someone marries twice, he is looked down upon and he has to live an outcast life generally. People meet the woman whose husband has married again with words of sympathy as though her husband has breathed his last. Strange isn’t it? Generally, people who are well of go for polygamy and generally, it does not prove a disaster for the family as it is believed at the outset. The western and Hindi society which does not allow polygamy have to face serious consequences at times. In the western society where the number women are greater than men's, so many have to go for extra marital relations which ultimately results in disintegration of the society. We can say that marriage is a religious act and polygamy for fun is condemnable. However, it is allowed conditionally if the individuals can maintain the bounds of god.
